what the pentagon is saying is that in this case, this was quite different. the previous balloons had transited briefly. while this one came swooping down from alaska through canada and then into the northern united states, arriving first in idaho, then into the central part of the country and then exiting through the eastern part of the country. it was loitering. it was hanging out as one defense official said for longer than previous balloons. it was therefore able to gather more intelligence than previous balloons. quite frankly, it was very obvious to many people on the ground. they were able to see it with their eyes. of course, this comes at a tense moment politically as well. of course, all that adds up to several reasons why the president would have wanted to take this balloon out of the sky. we understand he made that decision on wednesday after having been briefed on tuesday. there was a four-day gap between his first briefing on the 31st of january to saturday when that balloon was eventually shot down. >> alex, lots of questions looming over this
